Forte is working on a document/programming examples on how to use the
patches and MIDI with the GUS. When they are ready we'll release them.
The GUS SDK doesn't go into much detail about patches (PATCH.H) which is
why we are working on a more comprehensive document.

I think it is a very good move from Forte/Gravis. Could you (John
Smith) tell me when the more comprehensive document will come out?
By the way, after hacking around a little bit more, now I understand how
to interpret "envelope_rate", "envelope_offset", and "modes" fields in
PATCH.H and now my program is able to produce the sound from a patch
file through my GUS card. If anybody is interested in using my code,
I'm willing to share it. My code is not yet complete, and I'm still
adding more features to it.
Happy GUS hacking,
Hans.
